The display reads a number writting to it over a serial connection. Check google for a 'Serial LED Display', they retail anywhere between $30 -> $50 online, with 3 NPN transistors, 3 7 Segment Displays (common cathode), a few resistors, and a PIC16F684, you can build your on for much less!
